Get Ready for some Warm Fresh Churros

There may only be a few simple steps to getting your hands on delicious warm home cooked Churros but you have a whole host of options on how to get there.

You will need –

  1. Your ingredients combined into a ready to go dough
  2. A way to Pipe or Push your dough to create the Churro shape
  3. A cooking method to turn your raw shaped dough into captivating crispy Churros

A non-essential but for some a very important step in the process is also to decide upon the dips and toppings to go with the delicious warm Churros. It is definitely best to plan for this now so that you don’t have any regrets later on – although making a fresh batch is not really a hardship.

Preparing Your Mix

Let’s start by shortcutting this entire step – you could just go ahead and buy some Churro Mix to which you just add water.

Best Churro Ready Mix

Alises Spanish Churros Mix

Our preference is for the Alises Spanish Churros Mix.

The mix is pretty good and it comes with a piping bag.

If you are a churro connoisseur you may find them a little on the bland side. Our top tip – add a little vanilla essence.

Each box should be good for about 16 Churros.

If you are looking for quick and easy then you can’t go far wrong.

Roll Up Your Sleeves

If you are happy to roll up your sleeves then you need go get together your ingredients. To prepare the ingredients yourself you need to decide upon the style of churros you want. Opt for one of the three classic Country styles or get creative with your own culinary combination.

To keep things simple and traditional with a Spanish mix you will just need:

  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Water

For more flavour and a sweeter treat you can go more Mexican or American. In addition to the 3 staple ingredients above you will want some (or all) of the following: –

  • Butter
  • Eggs
  • Sugar
  • Vanilla Extract

Piping and Pushing

With your dough ready to go it’s time to craft your Churros. You can go fat or thin and long or short but to maintain the classic Churros look you will need to keep the star shape (it helps your dip to stick).

The traditional method to achieve your star treats is with a piping bag and nozzle but for the Churro crazy you can get yourself some specialised “churrera” equipment in the form of maker kits or gun presses.

Piping Bags and Nozzles

For nozzles you need to go large with open stars. The most common churro size is 9FT – this is also a great size for making eclairs. To handle the Churro dough you are also going to need strong and fairly large piping bags.

With that in mind here are our top picks for nozzles and kits with disposable piping bags

Good Nozzles
Large nozzles for making Churros
This is a lovely little set – smooth, seamless and made from stainless steel. There is only one 9FT but as they are all large with open starry designs they are great for making churros and will allow you to get creative.

Nozzles with Disposable Piping Bags

With this set you get three 9FT nozzles perfect for making Churros. What makes this set rise above the rest are the bags. You get 20 piping bags that are a very generous 18 inches in size and they are durable. Just the job and less washing up.

Manual Churrera’s

A churrera is basically a Churro maker. It’s a syringe style device that you use to push your dough through a star shaped nozzle.

I mostly use a piping bag but I do know that not everyone is a fan of this method and for some the act of twisting or squeezing is a much easier way to make their dough flow than pushing (especially if they like to make it thick). For some then, a churrera is a great alternative to a bag. It’s probably the thick dough that gave rise to these specialised bits of kits in the first place which is why they tend to be that bit sturdier and bigger.

Ibili

KneadEat

Starblue Churrera
Ibili Churrera
KneadEat Churrera
This is the top selling Churrera on Amazon right now and for good reason – it’s a great bit of kit for a very reasonable price. It is simple to use, easy to clean, comes with 8 discs which is great for mixing it up and also a recipe book. Right now there are two options on Amazon where for just a little extra you can get a piping nozzle and reusable piping bag – I do love a filled churro! I would say the recipe book is a little mediocre – but the internet is chocker full of churro recipes so that’s not too much of a hardship. It is a pretty strong and well put together but I can’t help but feel that it could be just a little bit sturdier.
This big chamber churrera from Ibili is beautifully made and incredibly sturdy. As with the Starblue it has a screw top design for moving the dough through the chamber and is easy to use and easy to clean. It comes with 12 discs, 3 of which are specifically for making Churros. One of these they have called the ‘special’ disc as it creates a hollow middle ready for filling – did I mention I do love a stuffed Churro. With the other 8 discs you can make a host of different pastries and snacks. This Ibili churrera has lots of 4 and 5 star ratings from Spain, the home of the Churro, which is high praise indeed.
This a lovely churrera and the only one that comes with a stainless steel nozzle. It has the biggest barrel and it’s see-through. It has a piping nozzle and bag as standard and is very sturdy. With just one nozzle it’s very specialised – there is a 3 nozzle version but I haven’t seen it in the UK. For me the price is a bit high (just shy of £30 when I write this) and it has some dubious claims. It boasts of a booster powered handle but there are no springs or motors so it’s good old hand power like the rest. The price does fluctuate so if it is around £20 when you’re looking then this KneadEat Churrera should definitely be on your consideration list.

If you are looking to pull the trigger on buying a churro maker and you want to go with the gun style then unfortunately your options are somewhat limited. Although you are essentially looking at a cookie press you need it to be big, strong and to come with a large star nozzle or the correct shaped disc for making churros – and there seem to be very few cookie presses that fit that bill.

Fortunately, the Aspiring Chef Co. have come to the rescue with a rather lovely bit of kit.
As a specialised making machine the three stainless steel discs supplied are all good for making churros so you will have some variety with your treats. If you love a filled churro like me then you also get a piping bag and a piping tip.

It’s mostly made of strong lightweight plastic so one-handed usage is possible – a definite bonus if you are cutting the churros from the tip straight into a hot pan of oil. The barrel is a pretty decent size, it’s bigger than a normal cookie cutter but you will still only be able to make 3 – 5 churros at a time. The see through barrel is very useful, making it easy to control your output and also making it easier to clean. It breaks down into a few parts for straightforward cleaning and it’s made even easier with the provision of the right sized cleaning brush. There is even a “Recipe book” – although once again this comes in the form of an e-book it’s actually pretty good.

There are only a couple of downsides – it is a little bit pricey compared to some of the screw style churreras, but if you really want the gun style then you will have to pay the premium. You might also find that occasionally the dough is going to try and get behind the plunger – this is a bit wasteful if you are just making one batch and makes it awkward to reset the plunger when you are making multiple batches.

With a little bit of practise and control this gun style maker will allow you to shoot out some truly wonderful churros.

Churro Machine

Once you have raw dough ready it’s time to get them cooked so you can get started with the savouring. The traditional method is to deep fry them by dropping them into hot oil. They are wonderful this way but it’s messy, a bit dangerous, wasteful of oil and you should probably use a thermometer to ensure you maintain the correct temperature. As lovely as they are this way – healthy they are not. If you want to ditch the oil then you can you bake your Churros or you can air fry them. Both of these methods are fine but you will miss out on some of the crunch and you might lose out on the star shape as the ridges are harder to keep in place with these methods. You then have my favourite method – a Churros Making Machine! You don’t need oil, your dough doesn’t have to be created star shaped, they are easy to make, they create and keep their shape in the machine and you get a nice uniform finish. The clean up afterwards is also a cinch as they pretty much all come with a non-stick coating. There are a couple of downsides – they won’t be as crunchy as Churros made in oil and you can only make a small amount at a time – usually four. You might need to put in a bit of effort to find a recipe that works for you and your chosen machine – breadsticks are not the goal – but once you get it right it’s delicioso Churros on demand.

Global Gizmos

Global Gizmos Churros Machine

StarBlue Churros Machine

Treat Factory Churro Machine

This is a fabulous machine that makes great churros in just a matter of minutes.

It has a 180° rotary system with slip proof feet on both sides that allows you to flip the machine over using the cool touch handle to achieve an even batter distribution and consistent cooking. The plates are stainless steel with a non-stick coating and a piping bag is included.

It looks great in shiny red and has a decent cable length of 70 cm.

With a little practise you will be able to make Churros that are a little fluffy on the inside and slightly crunchy on the outside with the starry shape that your dips will stick to.

This is also a good machine. Like the Global Gizmos offering it has non-stick plates, a stay cool handle and non-stick feet on both sides to facilitate flipping. It is slightly larger at 2cm longer, slightly more powerful at 750w and it’s visually very different coming in a white colour which will be important for the kitchen feng shui enthusiasts.

It doesn’t come with a piping bag but there is recipe guide which comes in the form of an e-book. The recipes are OK but as you have to go online anyway you already have access to a thousand different recipes. The extra power doesn’t translate to a quicker cooking time and I’ve actually noted that you are going to need a little bit longer to achieve a full fluff on the inside.

Once you have your recipe and cooking time sorted you will be able to whip up wonderful slightly crispy churros in your own home.

I am solely basing my opinion of this machine on the very small number of reviews left by others. I wanted to include it as a reminder that sometimes it is best to stick to tried and tested – especially when it comes to electrical cooking equipment.

I know it is not fair to draw my conclusions on so few reviews but they are pretty damning, here are some of the highlights: “The churros don’t cook properly” – “cooked on the outside, but not the inside” – “The lights didn’t work” – “The screw fell out the back”.

So it’s looking like a poorly made machine producing badly made churros. It does, however, produce the largest churros of the 3 machines shown here and it does come in black if that is the colour you need to complement your kitchen. I also like to be proved wrong so if you have a good review of this product to give then I would love to hear it.
